QUESTION:
Need some comforting words, this back pain is really something
rough! Can't seem to find the source. Doc says it's probably bursitis plus
some
sciatic (?) nerve involvement also. Have been mostly in bed for the past week.
Pain pills are not easing it, just making me nauseated. Any help greatly
appreciated. I know there are others in worse shape, but this pain is mine
and it really hurts.
ANSWER:
Laying in bed is the worst thing
you can do for your back. No matter how much it hurts, unless you can't stand
because your legs are numb you must get up and move around. Laying in bed makes
your back hurt worse. I have a habit of laying in bed to listen to the radio and
when I do it for several hours my back feels like hell. No matter how stiff I am I
try to get up and walk around or at least hobble over to the computer and sit in my
chair. For some reason being on the computer helps to lesson the muscle spasms.
I'm glad you're posting but sorry for the reason! Those sciatic nerves
are touchy big ol' worms!
Archer has gotten some relief sitting on ice. I can't do that...I use
a bathrobe tie to tie my moist heating pad on my lower spine.
Yeah, when ppl. say that pain pills won't touch the nerve
pain...that's when many FM'ly will tell you to ask for Neurontin. Seems it's
the only Rx for many that will handle nerve pain.
No one gives hugs that are as gentle as yours, Betty...but I hope
you'll take some that are as soft as I can make 'em!!
so did doc reccomend a treatment?? or just bed rest & PK's(pain killers)?
how do you feel about chiropractic adjustments?? if it's nerve impingment,
then a chiro could help ( i know mine did
also,i found moist heat helped the bursitis(my knee & shoulder)...or a warm
bath (lots of towels on bottom of tub for cushioning dang the
laundry)..hope you feel better soon.

That really depends on what the cause of the back pain is.... And with
FMS being such an odd disease, for one person staying in bed is the
wrong thing to do, for another it's the only thing to do. Life for us
would be a heck of alot easier if we all fit just ONE profile!
Having had extreme back pain (b4 surgery-3level laminectomy/3nerves
decompressed 8yrs ago-yay it worked!), I know where you are at on the pain
scale.
Ice, ice ice!! Lay in diff positions w/tons of pillow support, try letting one
leg hang off the bed while on your stomach if you can, but if it hurts
more...STOP!!! Do it on both sides but STOP immediately if it makes pain
worse. These are things my best pt had me do after I herniated a couple
discs...but rmember: disclaimer...I'm not a doc, healthcare person or anything
so ask your doc 1st b4 doing any suggestions!!!
I am so sorry you are having such a rough time. Can you ask the doctor
about the nausea? My neighbor says her doctor always gives her
something for nausea when she has to take certain pain killers. Seems
like the ones that work on the pain make her sick. Figures, doesn't it?
One thing that does help me with bursitis is adding extra B-6 to my
normal B-complex intake. Doesn't make me pain-free, but does help a
bit, and any help is *good* IMO
I have bad back and leg pain (sciatica) from L-4 and L-5 and being in bed is
the worst thing I can do.
I stiffen up from being in any one position too long and have to change
positions often. It is so bad for me that in the morning my Husband sometimes
has to help me out of bed and I need help out of chairs if I make the mistake
of sitting too long.
When things get acute I alternate between ice and heat in the area of L-4 and
L-5 and it helps some along with gentle stretching of my legs and some walking.
Nothing strenuous though and nothing takes it away compleatly the pain is
always there but more managable.
