QUESTION:
i am 21 weeks pregnant and have intense pain in my upper right side under
my ribs and into my upper back (same side). The pain is getting worse
every day but I have talked to the Dr. and had the gallbladder scan and
can not seem to find what is causing this. Has anyone else experienced
this type of pain and if so please tell me some ways to help relieve it.
ANSWER:
I had really similar, but later in pregnancy, about 34 ish weeks, scans and
bloods showed nothing, I just reckon the baby had been in a position that
had strained that area.
Have you had bloods done? there are things that would show on those, but not
on a scan, you'd usually have other symptoms other than the pain, but better
to be safe than sorry, if you haven't had bloods taken, ask someone, I'm
afraid I don't recall what tests would be needed, or actually which specific
thing that kind of pain can be a sign of, sorry not to be very helpful here.
Is it reflux? Shoving stomach acid up into the oesophagus tends to
produce intense pain in that sort of area. Try a suitable antacid and
see if that helps.
This could be HELLP syndrome -- I'm surprised no one else mentioned it.
Upper epigastric pain on the right side can be a sign that your liver
is being compromised by pregnancy, and means you need to be seen in L&D
for bloodwork (they usually call it a PIH panel, for pregnancy-induced
hypertension.) Other symptoms include a severe headache and visual
disturbances.
hey I did, just not by name, I knew it was something serious, hence
suggesting more checks, but I wasn't sure whether it was HELLP or Obstetric
Cholestasis that could cause that pain, so thanks for knowing the right one
and making the OP aware.
