QUESTION:
are you saying you have seen this person's x-rays and you know there is
nothing wrong with the back??? I don't think you need to go spouting off like
you are since you don't know anything about this person or their problems. What
might have been wrong with your back (or as you say, nothing was wrong), may
not be the same for the person that posted.
ANSWER:
I have been referred to a back clinic to see what is wrong with my lower back.
I will be seeing an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in lower back pain. The
clinic also has physical therapy and pain management. So, I am really hoping I
hear something more than "go home and lose weight and it will all be better".
if nothing more can be done, at least they can help me manage the pain so
that I can be more mobile and active and get more exercise and have a fuller
life. But I really feel there is something more wrong that an overburdened
back.
Do Not, I repeat DO Not go for surgery or physical therapy. There is
nothing wrong with your back. I can bet that once the doctor shows you
the x-ray and finds something wrong, and he will find something wrong,
your pain will increase. I was diagnosed with a slightly damaged disc
(l5/s1) turns out every human past the age of twenty has degeneration
in that disc, therefore every human should be crippled by back pain
like I was right? It is nonsense. Structural abnormalities, disc
herniations and even scoliosis do not cause back pain.
I recommend you read a book called Mindbody Prescription by Dr John E
Sarno. He has cured, (not helped) cured thousands of back pain
sufferers. Back pain is caused by your brain to distract you from
unwanted emotions and repressed rage. People used to get ulcers, now
they get back pain. The obsession with your back, and your attempts to
make sure you don't hurt it only aid in the distraction. Physical
therapy reinforces the false belief that the pain is structural in
nature, and helps to prolong the pain. Any relief you will feel from
physical therapy is temporary placebo effect. Do yourself a huge favor,
and save yourself a great deal of time, money and pain, and check out
this link, listen to the soundbites from 20/20 and Larry King,
and read Sarno's book. Have faith. Your back is not weak, it was
designed for hard work. The book is dirt cheap, and is an easy read,
you have nothing to lose and everything to gain.
Ruptured disks, fractured lamina, sciatic nerve impingement and many other ailments are not
figments of a persons imagination. Everyone will have some back pain in
their life and many of the pains will go away in time. It is the pain, lose
of feeling and function that people worry about. Many people hate going to
the Dr and rarely use back pain as an excuse not to work. I think its human
nature to put going to the DR., off. Therefore when they finally do go and
have a problem checked out it is because the particular problem won't go
away. The problem is real! I'm pretty sure many people are walking and
working with damaged vertebra and do not suffer from any serious pain, yet.
This persons warning about staying away from PT is unfounded. Those people
that drive a desk all day, use repetitive movements and get very little
exercise may benefit from seeing a PTist so they may stress the importance
of exercise and the correct way to lift and bend.
