QUESTION:
I'm having problems with my sciatic nerve. I noticed some dullish pain
while running a 12-miler last Thursday. On Sunday, while standing/walking
around, I'd get very sharp pains in my left gluteal area. I put off a run
today (Monday), but would love any advice/suggestions from those who've been
through this.
ANSWER:
I ran a 10miler (1:20:53) on Dec 11th and I had some stiffnes - 2 days
later I had sciatic pain all down the leg from buttock to ankle. I
tried a 1.5 mile jog 2 weeks ago but it flared again . Voltarol from
the doctor helped as did some remedial massage . Fiding what aggrevates
it helps - I obviously had a weak back so I have put much work in on my
back and Abs . For the first month I wasn't able to cycle and walking
hurt a lot. Now I can cycle and use the treadmill in the gym - for the
last 4 consecutive training sessions I have been able to do 20 minute
bike , back work , abs and upperbody then finish with a 20 minute
treadmill . I can now spend most of the day with only minor twinges if
at all (none today) . I hope to begin gentle jogging again perhaps end
of next week then build very slowly .
I have successfully treated a sciatic nerve problem for years. I suggest
the following: First if you have your wallet in your left rear pocket, put
it on the right side. Sitting on it inflames the problem. Second start an
exercise program of bent knee sit-ups to build your stomach muscles to
counteract the strong back muscles developed by running. Third, if you have
old shoes throw them out and get new ones with more cushion to reduce the
shock. If after doing the sit-ups for a month and still no improvement go
to an orthopedic surgeon (sports medicine specialist if possible) and get an
x-ray and expert diagnosis. If it is muscular get a referral to a physical
therapist. Forget the chiropractors.
Bob is an ignorant fuck, ignore him. Sciatic nerve problems ARE
EXACTLY what chiropractors are trained for. A MD can only offer pills
and sympathy.
I never credited it to you, so relax. Problem is, not many dr's do
that. You see surgeons do surgey, and to try to get you to NOT get
surgery is counterproductive to them going to mauii every year, or
getting the new mercedes. Yours is a raritie. Also realize most people
simply will not exercise as you did, no matter what the benefits.
