Epidural Back Pain - is it true?

QUESTION:
We had twins in January and now at 9.5 months and a total weight of 43 pounds I can pick both up and carry them around at the same time. I can also climb 3 flights of stairs and go down 3 flights with them so I don't think that the epidural had any effect on my back.

ANSWER:
I had an epidural almost two years ago with my first child during a hellish 20 hour labor. The epidural was in nearly the whole time and I didn't notice any back pain at all afterwards. I say "take the drugs" if you need 'em.

Well, epidurals do cause back pain and trouble. About 60% of women have trouble even three years later.

This is nuts. 60% of women who get epidurals have back pain and trouble three years later??? Simply nuts. Maybe you meant 0.06%

Simple facts. An epidural is a SAFE, EASY, RELIABLE method of analgesia during labor. There is no peer reviewed SCIENTIFIC PROOF to show that an epidural slows or prolongs labor or leads to a higher incidence of c-section or causes ANY problem for the baby. Many have tried to disprove this, no success yet.

Of course, nothing is without risk (that's why we wear our seat belts), but in this case, the risks are very minimal, the value of the pain relief is for your determination.

I didn't have any pain or do I have back trouble now. My arms are sore though from breastfeeding. :-) I was thnking that maybe the back pain is due in part by carrying the baby--I bet most people don't realize that you should carry the baby equally on both sides to avoid straining, to pick the baby up correctly so that you use your legs instead of your back. That might be part of it, I am not sure where you got your figures though.

I had an Epidural 6 weeks ago. Complete pain relief, but yes, I do have some back pain right where the needle/catheter were. Not constant, just if I move or strech a certain way. It has improved some since the birth, and I think it will probably disappear completely eventually. As far as I'm concerned, the little bit of pain (even if it doesn't disappear) was worth it and I'd do it again.

I think several people have admitted to it--and in my case, it was definitely the epidural, because it wasn't in the usual spot for "usual" lower back pain.
