Diverticulitis
What is Diverticulitis?
In some people, pockets form
in the bowel (called diverticules) that can trap
some of the "stuff" going through the intestines. The early stage
of the
disease is called diverticulosis, and then it progresses to diverticulitis.
Symptoms are similar to IBS. Frequently, people don't even know they have
it.
However, in extreme cases infection can swell the pockets until they burst,
causing peritonitis.
My mother was diagnosed with
diverticulosis during a routine colonoscopy. She
didn't know she had it.
A friend of ours had severe diverticulitis
which led to a burst diverticule and
peritonitis. He had an emergency colostomy and had to wear a bag for six
months. We thought we were going to lose him. After a few surgeries and
about
three years, he's pretty much back to normal.
People with diver(either one)
should avoid foods containing whole nuts, seeds
(sesame, poppy), popcorn (oh, heartbreak!), chunky-style peanut butter,
and
other hard-to-digest items, because that's what tends to get caught up in
the
pockets. Ask your doctor for more details.
I honestly don't know if there's
a link between endo and diverticulosis/itis.
It certainly wasn't with our friend (well, he's a guy!). But who knows,
with
endo all things are possible.
