best mattress for back pain?

QUESTION:
i would appreciate any quick advice on what has worked or what has not worked for sleeping for alleviating morning back pain. Right now I sleep on a cheap matress. Do i want to look for a firmer matress, or a foam matress to put on top of my currect mattress. Also, I would not want whatever I get to interfere too much with a romantic sex life, if that is possible. Thoughts? Advice?

ANSWER:
The viscoelastic NASA foam seems to be the kindest for not aggravating my hip pressure points, and it seems to be the better support for my low back, in that it would contour more than a standard mattress.

I went and tried the best that Sealy and Stearns & Foster had to offer, and the newest ones didn't seem that much improved over my 15-year old Sealy Posturepedic. But the NASA -Swedish-Memory-bounce-with- a-glass-of-wine-WHATEVER you wanna call it new age foam DID!

The Generation 2 foam bed from B Sleep, or one of its variations is what I'm going to get. I'm a heavy person, and the Gen 2 foam is more substantial for people needing firm support. And you can always put a topper of Gen 1 foam over it for a really cushy top layer.

But this website http://www.bsleep.com/Electric_Beds/electric_beds.html has the best prices I've found on the Web. I've talked to the people there twice, once about an adjustable bed, and once about a topper, and they really are nice, understanding people who seem to know lots about backs.

The adjustable is what I really want, and delivered and set up in my bedroom, a Queen size electric that will flatten when the power goes out (not all of them will - and if you have to sleep flat, it's a consideration) is $2400. And my doc wrote a script for it, so I think I can deduct it as a depreciable, maybe over several years.

The Gen 2 mattress from B Sleep is the same as the firmest Tempur-Pedic. It has wedges of foam underneath the sides, so you can sleep right out to the edges. The Gen 1 mattress doesn't have the wedges along the sides.

Gen 1 is their standard weight foam that would be fine for a smaller person - say 150 pounds or so. Ask them which density is right for you. I think the Gen 2 is probably going to hold up better, as a mattress,

The Gen 3 is a "zoned" foam that has like 6 variable densities, and it's waaaaay more expensive. BUT, although it's their be$$t bed, the woman at B Sleep talked me out of it!! Says it's too dang soft.

I know over 6 people, counting couples as one person, who have the Select Comfort air bed. Every single one of them loves it and wouldn't give it up without a very big fight. My daughter and my parents both have one, and I've tried it at their houses. I am saving my pennies to get one. The best thing about them is you can adjust the firmess on an as needed basis, wether its every night, every week, or more than once a night. I wish they'd come up with an adjustable bed with an air mattress like this! Then I'd have the best of Both worlds...
