QUESTION:
I'm currently 30 weeks along. At night I have lower back pain and pain
in my hips. The pain in my hips seems to be due to my lower back,
maybe nerves getting pinched. I sleep with pillows for support, but
it doesn't help. Sometimes I can massage my lower back and get
some relief or find a good position for my lower back to help with the
hip pain, but usually not.
Someone suggested to me that I see a chiropractor for my lower
back to see if that helped. I would like to hear from anyone who
saw a chiropractor during pregnancy. I want to know if it helped,
made no difference or if it made things worse. Also, if you saw
one during pregnancy, how did you go about finding one who was
experienced in treating pregnant women.
ANSWER:
I went to a chiropractor early on in my pregnancy. I am having the same
type of pain and I am only at 26wks. I generally opt for a massage first because it
relaxes more of the muscles and tendons in the back. I am getting one at
2pm today I will let you know if it helps.
Ask your OB or Midwife for a referral to chiro's in your area that do
pregnant women. I am going to be adjusted soon because of pelvic pains ugh
and also to make sure my back is alligned for labor.
Massage worked for me. I just got back (went shopping afterwards).
I would try a massage first. I just don't see where they can bend a
pregnant woman into a pretzel to do any adjustments. I can't even put my own socks
and shoes on.
I saw a chiropractor in my last pregnancy for sciatica. I could barely walk
when I went to see him, and after two adjustments I had no further pain. I am
seeing him regularly for this pregnacny on roughly the same schedule as I see
the OB. It has been very helpful so far in aboidin the various discomforts I
had in other pregnancies. My midwife recommended this chiropractor, but I
think most of them would do adjustments for pregnant women.
I went to a chiropractor all through my first pregnancy. It helped
enourmously and I put the fact that I didn't tear (or require an episotimy
(sp?)) although it was a ventouse birth down to all the work I had done.
Can't speak highly enough of it!!
Just make sure the practitioner knows you're pregnant - and at 30 weeks it's
probably pretty obvious!
If you already have a chiropractor, then going for adjustments
shouldn't be a problem. However, if you don't have one already, many
won't take you as a new patient, as they need to do an initial set of X-
rays first, and it's obvious you can't have the x-rays done.
You might try a massage first, as another poster suggested.
I saw a chiro for the last 4 months of my pregnancy with our younger son
because of problems related to a car accident, not the pregnancy. I found
that the waddle from painful hips that I'd developed with each pregnancy was
significantly reduced from having my hips adjusted. It did not hurt, either.
I was referred to the chiro by our GP and he was aware that I was pregnant.
I think most chiros will really encourage you to be adjusted during
pregnancy -- but then again, I think most chiros will push you to be
adjusted no matter what!
