QUESTION:
I have been to the doctors and had blood work, urine test, etc...
The blood test showed a slight elevation in white blood cells but the
kidney test and other came back normal. The pain started with the
swelling in the right side of my rib cage. If felt like someone
busted my ribs. Then it went away then it came back in the lower
right side near my pelvic I though maybe it was my appendix. Anyway
the pain has been here for 2 weeks now and it not going away and it is
becoming very irritating as I cant sleep at night.
I had an ultrasound taken and they said everything looked fine. And
that I had my liver a little swollen but not to worry, they said fatty
liver what ever that is. The thing is that the pain is getting worse
and all they said was take some vicodine. I am going nuts. Does
anyone have anything like this???
I DONT DRINK either that is why I have know idea why there is anything
wrong with my liver. But the pain feels like at times a sharp pinch
starting front of rib cage right side to back of bib cage on right
side. Also at times it is tender to the touch in the front to where
it hurts. The swelling has gone down but the pain is still there.
Then the pain sometimes travels down into my lower pelvic area on the
right and left side. Also have minor chest pains in right side at
times but not very often.
ANSWER:
I don't know, but with those symptoms, it sounds like they aren't looking
close enough. I would ask about possibly hepatitis or mono. I had those
symptoms when I had both at an early age. Taking Vicoden if you do
have a liver problem from hepatitis is not a very good idea as the APAP
is going to aggrevate the problem. In some cases where I have had a
flare up in that area, I've had much better luck just taking plain old
generic Ibuprofen. I once got so bad that I had to go to the ER after
having busted up a couple of ribs after taking a dive on some icy stairs.
They said I probably bruised some of the organs there and that they
were going to give me a shot to make me more comfortable. I thought
that I was getting demerol or something, they gave me the shot and in
about 10 minutes I felt like a new person, I asked what it was and they
said it was just a massive dose of industrial strength ibuprofen, most
likely Toradol or something along those lines. Then they told me to take
up to a gram for a couple of days and it really did the trick without any
narcotics. I'm not going to recommend this for you, you need to see
a doctor and get an opinion from someone that knows. But that was
my experience with similiar pain. Any time you see an odd white
blood cell count, that could be an indicator of hepatitis or mono, so
that's what made me think of that. It doesn't matter that you don't drink,
etc. I caught my case when I was just 14, and I still don't know where or
how I got it, but it wasn't from drinking or using a needle!! Get another
opinon, and I'd do it soon if you think you need to take more Vicoden,
that could actually be aggravating it..
I'm not a health care professional in anyway so this is shear
speculation. Your symptoms sound familiar to what my dad had some years
ago. He had an infected prostrate and his pancreas was affected also. The
pancreas caused the lower abdomen/pelvic pain and was very difficult to
track down. However a lengthy course of anti-biotic cured him.
Have you heard of DR Mirkin. He has a web site and there is a ton of info
on the site as well as a place to ask a question or two. A simple search
will find him on the web. "Gabe Mirkin" is his name and I'm sure you'll
find some answers to your questions.
Even in the lower abdomin?
One clinical presentation that I've seen is that of vasospasm in the renal
artery, particularly if there is a narrowing of that artery-causes ischemic
pain, and has been refereed to as abdominal migraine if the pain responds to
nitroglycerine. Very rare, but I've seen it.
